Collective, City Observatory, Calton Hill, Edinburgh, EH7 5AA
Collective re-purposed the City Observatory site on Calton Hill as a centre for contemporary art in 2018. As the birthplace of astronomy and timekeeping in Edinburgh, the site has a long and inspiring history of discovery and ingenuity.
However there are many other stories relating to Calton Hill which are less well- known and which suggest a more complicated past than that suggested by the monuments and memorials which are spread across the Hill.
For Doors Open Day 2020 we invited author and poet Lisa Williams to reflect on the historical association between the City Observatory and shipping operating from the Port of Leith, including the expansion of colonial commerce and the Transatlantic slave trade.
